Fiber Intake: Whole Foods vs. Supplements

June 20, 2019

What about fiber? Let's just tackle that one because we have different types, soluble, insoluble. Now, Hanselman's a mentor of mine. I spend a lot of time listening to this guy. But he of the opinion that on paper it looks the same but supplemental fiber just doesn cut it So he advocates pretty much what you said you know just a lot of whole foods and fruits and gut health tends to ride itself which is actually what Broderick says. When I first started mentoring with him, I sort of got the pen and paper out. It's like, hey, mate, tell me what you do for gut health. And he goes, dude, I just get him to eat clean and the gut fix itself. So, which is pretty much what you've said with a bit of a supplement in that least mode phase. Fibers, what are your thoughts on that? I think, you know what, here's the thing. If they're low-carbing it and they're not, for whatever reason, can't eat a lot of plant matter, maybe. Because a lot of people, you try to put them on a couple of kilos of plant matter a day and they fucking freak out. But they don't have any problem eating a couple of kilos of fucking meat, you know? Yeah. But we try to get as much as we can in whole foods. If they can't, give them beans, man. Beans are awesome. And then people are going to go, oh, the phytates, the phytic acid, the lectins and all that. They'll say, oh, fuck off. People are focusing on the dumbest shit. Like beans are fucking delicious and they jack up your fiber and they give you really pretty poop. Right. So eat your fucking beans. Um, when you look at supplemental fibers, I think there's a place for it, but just like with any supplements that supplementing a healthy lifestyle and diet. So for instance, if I have somebody that I, they're bloating all the time and they have like they burning pain in their stomach. Yeah. I might give them some, something like some aloe vera fiber. I might give them some slippery Elm. If they're having either constipated, I might give them some slippery Elm or something like that to make it, you know, kind of ease that down. If they have a lot of diarrhea or they're peeing out of the butthole, I might give them some psyllium husk to kind of create some bulk and soak up some of that water. But we very rarely prescribe supplemental fiber for people because if they're eating a lot, they're probably going to get plenty of that in. So it comes back to that getting as much as you can from whole foods. Yeah. And in a lot of cases, you start adding a lot of supplemental fiber that's not in a whole food form. It tends to start grabbing vitamins and minerals that you're making in your guts. and you start creating mineral defense or vitamin deficiencies. Interesting. Okay. All right. Anything else re-gut health or anything pointed out there?
