Chapter 3 · The Ali Gilbert Podcast

The Rise of Step Tracking Culture

October 27, 2023

I've got a buddy right now. He has a girl doing like 24,000 steps, right? And that's because her calories are so low and that's what's going to she's going to she can't possibly eat lower than that i mean she could but it would be detrimental at some point your calorie the low end is going to be detrimental to holding on to your muscle tissue she's getting ready for for big competition so like your next best choice is why i need to improve output well how do i do that well i'm gonna have to do more cardio now everybody in the industry makes like walking is sexy like let's periodize our walking and you know it's like why with okay if i'm if i'm a physique athlete and i'm walking for 12 000 steps a day and my heart rate is like 75 80 on my walk you could easily get on an elliptical and push that up to like 150 120 and get your calorie output done in a fraction of the time and it's not gonna have any issue with burning off your muscle tissue it's not going to have any issue with needing to recover from it because it's so low intensity. So, you know, a lot of guys will go, nah, I can't do the cardio. Cardio, is that a Spanish word or something? You've seen all the memes, right? And I can tell you, most guys need to be doing it, especially if they're on TRT and especially if they're a little bit overweight. I think I told you in a chat, like I tell a lot of guys, you're too fat for TRT or you're too fat to do a cycle. Like if you're, if you're overly fat, you are going to aromatize a lot of that testosterone. So you're basically wasting your money and you're creating other negative effects. If you would just lose some weight, the TRT would work a lot better and your cycle would work a lot better as well. You know do you like I always think how weird it is because we grew up in the eighties and nineties like even you know 10 15 years ago to be like like I gonna track my steps like to track steps is like such a weird concept and now literally you see people on IG stories they're like getting my steps morning steps evening steps like fuck like were we that lazy now like periodizing steps like you said it's like this is the only thing yeah it's it it baffles the mind because man, people don't have time for that. And I've never, I mean, I've trained you for years now and I've never asked you to get you like, how many steps do I get? I don't care. Like just do your cardio. If anything, cause I like walking so much, you know? Yeah. And it's like, if somebody's already got significant amount of steps, like asking them to do more steps, you have to look at the reality of how much time it takes to get the steps in. Cause a lot of people, like I walk really fast. I walked at about 100 and 121 steps per minute. That's obnoxiously fast. And people complain when they walk with me that I walk too fast. So for me to get 10,000 steps is I get that done far faster than someone who gets 100 steps per minute. Right. So and you don't see these people going out. They're not speed walking. They're just like casually walking, getting their steps in because they feel like if they go a little bit faster, they're going to waste all muscle tissue it's so stupid right
