Chapter 12 · The Unknown Strength Podcast
Measuring Metabolism and Lactate
January 03, 2019
So when you talk about cell recovery, what do you exactly mean by that? And how do you know when your cell has recovered? Well, you don't. I mean, that's the thing. Unless you have a lab and you're getting tested with all this stuff. But like I showed you guys, this is the lactate scalp. It's a little blue bag with a little prick machine thing. It's an expensive piece of equipment that I bought from North America. And what it does, it tells us where your blood lactate is. By using this, we can tell what's going on in the mitochondria.
When glucose comes in, if you start getting really stressed out and you start getting resistant to energy or losing your metabolic flexibility and you start building a lot of free radicals, your mitochondria is going to go, fuck that. This is causing damage. I can't handle this. And it's going to start kicking glucose out as lactate, and that will rise fasting. So if I see that rising, I understand that what we're doing is probably pushing your metabolism in the wrong direction. So maybe we back off here or back off there and reappropriate what you're doing to regain that so then everything starts flowing correctly. So there are things you can measure. Most trainers aren't going to buy this because it's a $1,000 piece of equipment. And it's not practical. I have it because I do stupid shit like putting implants in the back of my arm to measure my blood glucose. My fingers, I can't even get blood out of my fingers because I take blood ketones, blood glucose. I measure everything. I take my heart rate every day, my HRV, my blood pressure. I basically do a stool analysis when I send pictures of my poop to Isaac. Here's the thing. If anybody listening wants to know if their poop looks okay, take a picture and send it on Messenger to Isaac Davidson. He's seen it all. He's our poop specialist, and he's happy to tell you if your poop is good or not. I actually sent some off for a microbial. I think I sent it off there to actually find out how my gut health's doing. So a couple of weeks away from knowing the results, but I'll make sure I also send that off to Isaac. Just if you could. He'll love it. What's his home address, by the way? I don't think he actually has a home right now. He kind of lives with us, between us, and he's kind of a vagabond to whoever has a couch. So we'll just send our shit to you. No, no, no. I'll forward it on to him. Actually, if you guys have the shit tonight, just shit and just hand it to him. It's good. Something you were touching on about metabolism, the way you talk about it, you're mentioning a few case studies before we jumped onto the podcast. You're talking about metabolism and fixing people's metabolism and you make it sound like it's something that's elastic and fluid and not something that's so set. I guess sort of expand that a little bit with metabolism. Is it something that you've got your metabolism and that's it, that's your metabolism, you respond to that as is or is it something that can be changed, modified, ramped up, down, what?
