Tapering and Cellular Recovery
January 03, 2019
Yeah. There's so many other factors that go into play, right? So I was actually, I had a coach from Adelaide come in and we did some, he's opening a facility and he wants to know what he should do. And I'm not good at business. My business advice is here's the things you don't want to do because this is the shit me and Zoe and I fucked up with. This is what we did. Yeah. And I actually trained him for powerlifting and also for long distance running. So he comes to me and he wants these two completely opposite goals. How do you do this? This is the hybrid athlete shit, the Alex Vieira stuff. It's a guy named Costa. I'm not going to say his last name because he's Greek and there's more consonants than vowels. I can't. And I told him that this morning. I'm like, I've been training you for a while and I've known you for a long time and I still can't say your last name. So you're just like Costa M. That's it. and um you know one thing that kind of a light bulb that went off in my head that people don't know about is when you're getting ready for a powerlifting meet he wants to lift heavy all the way to the meet and i'm like no you need to recover he goes but if i don't keep lifting really heavy i'm not going to i'm not going to feel the weight here and i go no you need to relax you've got to relax you've got to request you have to recover not only your nervous system but your muscular system but you also have to recover the the cell and that's something people don't think about. So we taper off two weeks out, he comes out and he knocks out 15 more kilos on all his lifts because he stepped back and actually let his body recover. People don't think about things like that. So when you're bashing people in the gym, you're not thinking about that nervous system relaxation. You're not talking, you're not thinking about the muscular, you're not thinking then about the emotional, you're not thinking about the cellular. There's a lot of stuff that needs to recover. There's a lot of things to consider. But the thing is no one teaches this stuff. And when you go into the cert three, four, and you go through like, let's look at the muscle fiber. Let's look at the cell. You kind of glaze over all that. And you just try to pass everything because all you want to know is sets reps, time under tension, rest, periodization, just practical. Yeah. Purely practical. And if you learn that first, you're putting the cart before the horse, right? Because you don't know what that stuff is stimulating in the body. And what you're trying to do is feeding your body information to get it to move a certain direction. But if you don't know what that information then stimulates, how are you going to predict where they're going?
