Training Adjustments for Stressed Clients

January 03, 2019

Absolutely. And here's the thing. What coaches have to understand is that physiological state, the psychological state like that then has repercussions downstream. So you come in and that's a nearly driven process. So then you come in and you go, okay, we're going to do three to one wave loading or we're going to do lactate sprints on the bike. And your physiology is not set up to cope with that. Lifting weights in conditioning is fantastic to build stress resilience. And that's the whole point. We're going to get stronger. We're going to build more stress resilience so we can handle heavier weights and more volume later. But if they come in and they're in that state, they're not in a state to recover or perform. they're in a state for maladaptation and into regress instead of progress so at that point it's like what do you do do we not train okay cool so how about this we can go get a coffee and talk cool your job as a coach is one thing get results yeah and sometimes results doesn't mean that we're bashing their dick in the dirt right but then again you know if you're if you're in a an area like if you're you know in cbd and you've got ceos and they expect to be trained okay what do I do because they still want to be thrashed. It's okay. So maybe we think if this is a neurally driven issue, why don't we move to the other end of the strength spectrum? Maybe we do some metabolic work instead, some muscular endurance, strength endurance, and like a submaximal type work. Let's work on some technique stuff with submaximal weights instead of using force, maybe use a little more velocity and technique so that you can limit that neural drive. That way their nervous system calm the fuck down. And then you talk to them about, hey, you really need to lease mode your beast mode. Why don't you go get a massage this week? Go get a rub and tug. Go get in a float tank. Whatever it is you do to relax.
