Chapter 7 · The Unknown Strength Podcast
The Coach's Role in Emotional Support
January 03, 2019
Well the first thing is you got to get educated on what to look for So what we do obviously it not in a trainer wheelhouse to counsel people We can talk or we can listen. What's going on? If you want to tell me, that's fine. You can talk about it and maybe you're the only person that person has to talk to. People come into us and we think we need performance, we need fat loss. You might be the only person in the only three hours that week that that person talks to and actually listens and talks back and actually gives a shit, right? And so the first thing is saying, okay, this person's, you build this trust, and this person's telling you all this stuff. And when I was in my 20s, I would tell people, listen, I'm here to coach you. Shut the fuck up. I don't care if your partner's cheating on you. I don't care if your kid's smoking. I don't give a fuck. Fucking squat. That's the silverback gorilla, right? Yeah. And if I could get a DeLorean and I could go 88 miles an hour and go back in time, I would beat the shit out of myself, right? I would. I'd be like, stop being a fucking dick. Let me tell you what's in your future so you can go ahead and start helping people now instead of waiting 20 years to help people, right? Interesting. I mean, like I had this conversation with Mac once. Like I think invariably when you're a strength coach or a coach or anyone in that sort of coaching role, invariably you become that supporting and nurturing type character in their life. And like, you know, even Mac can attest, like so many times I'll come in the gym, like various times, whether it's in the morning or not, coming from work, coming from home, various issues. And it's hard sometimes when life gets in the way, shit hits you. Come into work, start training with Mac, and he has to deal with me in different moods and different sort of states. And the amount of battles I've had with him, I'm just like, no, I'm just not in the headspace to squat right now. I am going to argue with you for an hour about all the reasons why I can't do it because my headspace is not right.
