Psychology and Trauma in Coaching

January 03, 2019

Yeah. So we came in this weekend to do when it's not about the food. It's a, it's a psych, more of a psychology type seminar that we teach for trainers. Right. And so we bring in a trauma counselor from New Zealand who she does early childhood traumas and you know, any, any type of trauma that you might have stuck in your brain that's inhibiting you from getting to your best potential and also inhibiting you from doing what you need to do to get your shit straight. So they deal with a lot of super obese people and really damaged people that have gone through car accidents, mommy-daddy issues, or bullying and isolation. So the whole premise of the seminar is to teach trainers, A, how to have empathy, especially in the strength and conditioning community because it's so alpha male, silverback, gorilla, all that bullshit that it's so performance-orientated that people forget that these are human people with emotions and that sometimes people are fucked up. And people in the industry are fucked up. Most of the trainers that I know got into the industry because they're so damaged and they don't want to deal with their own shit that they didn't say, okay, well, if I can't handle my own shit, I'll go help everyone else. And that's how I'm going to get that dopamine reward kind of center-driven addiction. That's my addiction is just being a workaholic and helping people. Is that some kind of syndrome or phenomenon? Is there a name for that? It's just trauma. Yeah. It's just, it's just, so basically you have a traumatic episode and you don't deal with it and that gets stuck in your brain. It doesn't get filed away. So the way that, uh, Nick Symes, who is our, our kind of resident trauma counselor, the way she talks about it is if you look in a library and you've got all these books laying around that they need to actually go back in the bookshelf. and if you don't put them back in the bookshelf you have all this unresolved baggage that then drives your physiology to self-sabotage so let's say somebody gets stressed out, how are they going to control that stress? They're going to self-medicate whether that's drugs or booze or overeating or over-exercising any number of addictions. It could be anything Isaac loves chronic masturbation, he does that a lot and we had to send him in to get some medical things for his penis because it was rubbed raw yeah so he does one time across that way yeah like from a from a physiological standpoint when you're on when you're a coach and the majority of the people that we deal with is fat loss that's 99.8 percent of the industry and when you're dealing with people that keep binging and keep purging and keep doing all this stuff and over exercising and you're like why can't you get your shit together it has nothing to do with the food and the training it has to do with the fact that these get people in emotional pain and they need help. And unless we teach trainers about it, you don't learn this in your three, four, there are no other courses on the planet. And that's why we made it. So we do a day and a half of kind of some Kumbaya. Let's talk about our feelings. Let's, this is what's happening with trauma. This is where your clients are doing this. And then we do a day and a half of me doing penis jokes to kind of, you know, get the mood back up after everybody's crying for a day and a half.
