Chapter 1 · The Sean McGuinness Podcast

Origins of Least Mode

August 10, 2020

okay welcome to episode 22 of the sean mcginnis podcast and today we have a very special guest luke lehman on now luke is a world-class educator coach former powerlifter nearly a blue belt in jujitsu texting and bringing a refreshing approach of putting the health back in the health and fitness industry ironically um now luke in the last few episodes we talked about a lot about stress and my kind of near-death experience where I thought I was having a heart attack one day but it just turned out to be an anxiety attack from being a typical PT with lots of coffee and this was when interval training was very popular no sleeping no relaxing stuff so your least mode was basically created for my former self and probably your former self as well So what is the basis of Lease Mode, apart from the cool name? Well, I mean, really to understand it, let's go back to the start of how we came up with the idea, right? So a good buddy of mine, Zach Trowbridge, that has a nice facility in Chicago, we were laughing at people on Instagram that were, you know, hashtagging Lease Mode. We're walking them work out and we're sending videos of these people. I don't think these people understand what training hard really is. Like there's nothing, nothing in any of these videos that they're beasting anything. And you have to understand, like I come from a background, uh, like elite level athletics and, you know, I've been training, I've been weight training since I was eight years old. I started powerlifting at 14, um, after powerlifting, you know, and we basically are, our powerlifting team destroyed every single meet we went to. So, and then I kept powerlifting after that. And I eventually got tired of powerlifting because that was back when people started using the ridiculous supportive gear. And I never considered that. I respect what they can do with the supportive gear, but it was not for me. To me, it wasn't true strength. For me, strength is what can I do in shorts and a t-shirt, not, you know, a three-ply double denim custom. Now, you know, I'm training, I'm competing against guys that can barely lift 150 kilos in a bench and they go to a meet and they bench to 230. Right. And so I finally got enough of it and just stopped. So, um, yeah, so we were kind of having a giggle. And he told me he goes, haha, it's more like hashtag least mode. And I went, huh?
