The Car Engine Analogy for Metabolism

February 18, 2021

look man you can drive if you're racing somebody you can you can redline that thing before you shift yeah but if you were to do that all day every day and constantly redline your car going to start falling apart so you know a car if you think about the way a car produces energy It very similar Like engines make calories You can measure the amount of energy in an engine with calories But if you think about what you need to make a car faster, you know, the first thing you need to do is you've got to get more oxygen in the car. So maybe you put a turbo or supercharger on it or you put nitrous, compressed oxygen. The secondary thing is you need more fuel. So if you want more performance, you have to get more oxygen in. That's your aerobic system. And you need more fuel. That's your food coming in. And you need more transporters for that food. So that's amino acid transporters, fatty acid transporters, glucotransporters. And then you've got to make sure that the structure of the car can handle it. Is the car, is it aligned? Are the wheels on tight? Does it have the drivetrain and the tires to put the power to the floor? So a lot of the same thing can be said of people. If you are doing a lot of exercise and you're increasing the oxygen, but you don't bring enough fuel and you have like poor fuel injectors, well, your car is going to start running rich or lean or whatever. And the engine is going to blow. It's not going to produce the energy you need it to. Same thing happens in humans. If I'm doing a lot of exercise, but I don't support that with enough food, performance goes down. If I do that, then metabolism, metabolic rate goes down. If I add more food and I bring in more oxygen, performance and metabolic rate goes up. And so it's very, very similar. Yeah, nice. Really, really like that as well, actually. And in terms of the, actually, we're going to go two last questions and it won't keep you any longer. So the main kind of thing, or one thing that I did want to touch on was when we do enter an aggressive dieting phase, we know we are entering into it. What are the common mistakes that you might see the average show or general population make when entering a dieting phase? And how would you correct and advise these mistakes?
