BMI and Health Risks for Lifters

April 09, 2023

Getting hypertrophy to a human body, evolutionary speaking, is not natural. Your body doesn't want to get gigantic. That's why I've had this argument with people for years that BMI still matters, even if you're big and ripped and you think you're in shape. All right. And I've had this argument and last year, I think Luke Tolick sent me a, sent me a paper on it showing that people that are bigger, even if they're leaner, are still at a higher risk for mortality than people with a lower BMI. And part of it was, we can probably make a percentage where the BMI is probably a little bit too narrow. If you're lifting weights, maybe we, and it's not in your natural, we open that up a little bit. So for me, if you're in the overweight category and you're lifting weights, that's probably pretty good. But if you're in the obese category, because you're massive, because you're on a bunch of gear, you need to really have a coming to Jesus talk with yourself because I don't give a shit that you're fricking 6% body fat. If you're, if you're my height, if you're six foot tall and you're 124 kilos and you're 5% body fat and you're like, what's that, like 35, 36 BMI, you are increasing your risk for all cause mortality. I don't care that you think you're healthy and in shape because you're fucking oats and oatmeal every day. Let's break that down a little bit more because I think it is important. I've had the same argument, share the same opinion as you is that obviously the further you shift away from that sort of bell curve, central point of the bell curve for body weight that you are increasing the stresses of all cause mortality what are some of the things despite the fact that you may otherwise appear to look healthy or look lean and fit what are some of the problems that people need to be aware of with escalation of body weight irrespective of what that is
