Evidence-Based Coaching vs. Research Paper Obsession

January 25, 2020

yeah I guess it goes back to those subjective and objective measurements that you need both say that again you broke up a little bit I guess it goes back to those subjective and objective measurements or metrics that you need both of them you can't just go okay well I feel this way it's like cool what's your blood glucose levels actually look like Like what's the actual midway? Absolutely. And, um, you know, it's, uh, one of the graphs I have, you know, you look at these guys that call themselves evidence-based, right? And most of the guys who are evidence-based, especially the really young guys, they've not trained anyone. What they need to say is I'm research paper based and what they're, they're fucking paper champs, right? Um, evidence-based should be that. Yes. I look in the literature, but I also have tens of thousands of hours of actual under the bar training people, training myself.

time and then I try to compare those two things together because what you end up doing you get guys that basically masturbate to research and then when you actually try to apply the research it doesn't work or someone tries to replicate that research and no one else can replicate the whatever they found in that that paper and then you're like well shit then that research that you're you're on top of the mountain screaming at everybody that you know this is dumb and you should do this and then you're looking like that's the only paper that's shown that and no one's been able to replicate the the outcome that paper's full of shit you know but then you've got all the bro scientists too that they they they talk about empirical observation is this is the blah blah blah this is the key um but then you have a research a couple of research papers that says they're full of shit well you're obviously full of shit like you know you've got it this is it's why it becomes so convoluted in our industries you need to look at all this stuff right so it's it's not good to just be a researcher you want to be a bro scientist too you don't want to be just a bro scientist you need to look at your ideas and try to confirm them or try to falsify them with with with peer-reviewed evidence right and somewhere in the middle is lies the truth of all this stuff yeah there's a lot of shit we haven't there's a lot of shit we haven't researched and we know the shit works no one's ever falsified it no one's going to pay to research it if you If you look at some of the newest literature on protein amounts, right, you know, the RDA said 8 grams per kilogram. And then research came out and said, no, for performance, you really need one. Then it was 1.2. Then it was 1.4. Then it was 1.6. Last year, a paper came out saying it's probably 1.8. And in that research paper, they said, well, we know that there have been studies up to 4.4 grams per kilogram with no ill effects. you might as well just do 2.2 grams per kilogram if we know we see that it's 1.8 that way it doesn't leave any doubt you know you're getting enough protein and i looked at that paper and i went huh where have i heard one gram per pound of body weight oh arnold schwarzenegger they weren't that dumb to be to look at their empirical observations and eating one gram per pound of protein, we're now confirming it's 70 years since they first started doing it, right? It's decades since, you know, it's over 50 years since they were talking about 10 to 12 being the ideal rep range for hypertrophy. Now we've got research papers that confirm that. If we wait for research to confirm what we see empirically, then we're going to be way behind the times. Holy shit. Sorry, I just got on my soapbox. I mean, you got me sent in as fuck for me to listen to you go for it so by all means keep going
