so when I first started doing it, I was in London, and this was probably four or five months ago, and I was pretty low-carb. I was doing the typical stuff that I used to do. I'm not somebody who can handle carbohydrates. I should cycle my carbs and all this stuff. And I was doing, you know, my performance wasn't all that great when I was losing body fat, but I felt awful. But my blood sugar looked amazing. I was getting some hypoglycemic episodes a little bit Which is probably going to happen sometimes Especially with stress And then I got back here and I said Okay, now that I've been traveling for five years Now I'm going to have a home And I can wake up in my own bed And I can go to my gym And I can get my food and prepare everything You know what, I'm going to do the opposite Why don't I drop the fat down Jack up my carbohydrates and see what happens And you know what happened? I lost 12 kilos in about seven to eight weeks all my strength's up, my performance is skyrocketing, and I'm going into 40, I feel like I'm 16 again, and my libido is starting to come back, which I haven't had a libido in, I can't even tell you, when the last time I had that and if you look at the research low diets will crash all your hormones Long low diets is awful for thyroid health awful for testosterone awful for women cycles Women need approximately 80 grams of glucose a day just to run and make sure that their lady parts stay healthy So it's a matter of knowing when to chop and change. So those things are all appropriate for a person at a particular time of day, even if it's just to shock them into change and then you change? Is there ways that people can, all of those things are, so a low-carb keto system, all those sort of things are suitable for everyone at some stage? It can be, yeah. It's just hard to know when and when they need to change. That's the thing. If you have a dogmatic belief on how nutrition works and how the body works, then you're going to latch on to something that works really well for you. But you have to realize they all work for different people at different times. You know, I tell people the more stressed out you are, the less carbs you need. Because once you start getting stressed out, you start running more fast glycolysis. glycolysis you're not going through substrate oxidation you're not breathing correctly you're hyperventilating because of stress you're not getting enough oxygen there's a lot of things that change and you'll you'll you can observe that for instance if somebody you know not sleeping a lot and they're not really eating well and they're not training like they should and they're stressed out and they go walk up a flight of stairs and their legs feel like they're just in a 12 rep max on the squat yeah that's common but it's not normal and what that's telling me is your energy systems are off and you're not actually using your mitochondria yeah so maybe we cut carbs back a little bit increase some of the more aerobic work maybe we take some supplementation resveratrol pqq things that are going to increase mitochondrial biogenesis and drive those pathways and then when we get your your energy flow your bioenergetics when that gets back in order then we can start smashing you again in the gym yeah and so you said before that you can you murder to your blood sugar and you can see your different energy pathways and that sort of stuff working can you use that same testing with the blood sugar the heart rate and everything to see um stress the effects of stress or when the exercise has been coming too stressful for you yeah absolutely so if if i have someone that's waking up and they have really high waking heart rate and what that tells me is what what raises uh heart rate stress hormones epinephrine right so if they're waking up and they've got a 90 beats per minute which we like to keep them in the 50s you know and uh that tells me that your body basically thinks it's wrestling a bear all night while you're sleeping so they come to me and they go i'm just not sleeping well we start taking their waking heart rate and say well fuck you're sitting at 98 yeah like what what what's your body think it's doing it's in a fight-or-flight mode yeah yeah and you've just woken up yeah you're not going to sleep when you have tons of epinephrine being dumped and the other thing too that's got these cool studies now showing that same thing as um using those same blood sugar monitors and again keeping an eye on heart rate they can actually see whether people are allergic or intolerant to food so yeah they've actually done that same studies now where they've given people where they can monitor their blood sugar changes and they will highlight which foods are bad for them and it doesn't really matter if it's an allergy and intolerance so for us in the clinic you know we do the igg iga testing to tell allergies but you can't really test for intolerance other than symptom picture but if you're monitoring this blood sugar heart rates and that sort of stuff you can see when your body's stressed when it's enjoying work you can see which foods have put you into a stress response as well um so there's so much information you can come from your monitoring and that will give people the power to take control of their own health and know when they're on the right track or the wrong track and how much anxiety with that relief for these people and from a physiological point of view that that's exactly correct i mean adrenaline is released when you're stressed and even if you're eating food that's stressing your body out adrenaline's released adrenaline is also doesn't just raise your heart rate increases your blood pressure by being a vasoconstrictor like if you went to the dentist you know the anesthetic they give in your gums that's often fortified with adrenaline to stop the bleeding so it's a very potent vasoconstrictor so it does drive up blood pressure so blood pressure heart rate are two great markers to see whether your body's stressed to either exercise or to foods so that's correct so that's that they're two great measurements you can use in your in your clinic you add that blood sugar testing into it you'd be able to chart a lot of things in your body that are stressful which are good and which are bad for you and also know when you're in that optimal window to train and which are days that you You should probably skip the intensity and go for a casual walk. You know, that sort of thing. Like, how do you know when to switch off from one phase to another? Well, we're watching the adaptations. Yeah. If I'm doing a bodybuilding show and I'm doing a lot of strength work, well, strength work increases the hypertrophy of the left ventricle, which means that it's going to raise your blood pressure. When you do aerobic work, it increases the inside, the cavity in that. So when you get a guy that's been training for bodybuilding shows and he's like, fuck cardio, So he's going to have a really thick wall, muscular wall of the left ventricle, but his blood pressure is going to go up and his heart rate is going to go up because he's not able to push a lot of blood because you need to expand the inside portion of the heart where you actually pull the blood. So what you want is a good balance. You want a good, a nice big chamber, but then you also want a nice push as well. So that's where,
binding strength training with the conditioning works really well. And on the flip side, when you have guys that do marathons and they don't do any weightlifting, they tend to have too much eccentric hypertrophy of that left ventricle, but they don't have a muscular lining, so then their blood pressure drops. So what they need is a lot more strength training. So that's how we start looking at and interpreting where you're at physiologically and what we need to use.
