The Coach as a Guide
September 19, 2021
I remember with the one had Andrew Coates on, he was saying that, you know, talk about storytelling. He was like, if this was a Harry Potter movie, the coach's job is to be Dumbledore. Not to be Harry, not to be the star. I love I absolutely love that. Yeah Yeah I like that That good That good And I have to talk to him about that because he needs to explain that to me more because that good Yeah Yeah And you talked like and it it was a really interesting conversation because every story has to going back to the fiction literature, every story is that sort of same thing. There's a guide, there's a hero, and like, you know, and they all go through a very, very similar path. And it's quite interesting when you draw parallels to this. Again, someone else is well-read. This is my wake-up call to start reading more fiction, I think, this episode. Yeah, I think, I mean, you've heard me say this in like program design and foundations and stuff. You have to look at this. If we go back to storytelling, you know, you're hired by the client to help them write a book. So essentially, you're the editor, right? So you're going to lay out the outline of how this needs to go. We need a table of contents. Then we're going to need a chapter one that opens and everything. And then we also need, we need to go look at the end. So how do you write a proper program? Well, you have to look at the end and work your way back to where you're beginning. So it's a lot like that. But ultimately, the client has to actually write the book. They have to actually put the words on the paper. And it's your job to just edit things and correct things and also to guide them towards that end conclusion. Yeah, I think that's a good way of saying it, like help them write a book. Because I think there's a lot of, going back to dogmatic things, when people look at sort programs on with people it's almost very much uh you know it's it's do this do this and like they have this idea in their head of where they want to be and if the client doesn't necessarily agree to that you've i i always reference you with it um where people say like i i want to lose a couple of pounds and just like throw them in the squat rack and make them get on stage you know it's yeah you know like the more i the years i have in this the more conversation in terms of my clients becomes so much more important it's like i'm gonna let you dictate this story and i'll just i'll just go yeah yeah yeah
