The Importance of Foundational Physiology Education

What does that conversation look like with a client Because essentially what you trying to do there is get them to almost hit the pause button on some of these maybe lofty goals they may have and especially if they very performance orientated and they want something in a certain period of time And almost okay let pull back on this so we can work on this other stuff that can probably be a difficult sell for some people so maybe just for even coaches listening pragmatically how does that conversation often play out with you how do you frame it for someone that might need that well the first thing is just being completely honest right being honest with the client look this is this is where you are physically right now and this is where you want to be, but I can't take you to that level without harming something else until we get everything right. So knowledge is power. First and foremost, you need to understand basic biochemistry, basic exercise metabolism, right? So there's a need to go out and get that education because you're not going to get that education in like a cert three, cert four or weekend course, you know, you're going to learn enough to pass the test. And most trainers just want to get their license to go train people. And they have no idea what they're doing. Even guys that have an exercise phys degree, Like they've done all of this cool theory, but then they leave and they don't know how to apply it, especially to gen pop. Because everybody does an exercise phys degree because they want to go train athletes. Then they realize athletes are broke. So then they're like, fuck, I can't actually make a living and have kids and a nice car and a house doing this. So where's the money? It's in general population. Those are the people that need it the most, the people who aren't genetically gifted, who aren't athletes, who have a lifestyle that's contributed to them being, have a completely dysfunctional body, metabolism, structure, function, and all that. So understanding like, okay, what happens when I actually eat food? How does it get broken down? How do I assimilate it? How does it get into the cell? How does it get in the mitochondria? What happens after that? How do we recycle energy? You need to know this stuff, not to be a biochemist, but to know it at a functional enough level to understand how to pick the right type of diet and the right type of calories and things. And then on the training side, how do I pick the right modality? I've got 300 templates I can use when I train somebody. I have 50 different conditioning protocols. How do I know which one of those to pick, and how do I know how to put those together with the nutrition in a long-term periodized scheme to get somebody from A to B? And most trainers don't do enough continuing education, or they're busy learning advanced hypertrophy techniques, advanced fat loss techniques, when they don't even know the fundamentals of any of this stuff.
