Programming Strategies for Fat Loss vs. Muscle Gain
January 10, 2025
When you're programming, what I recommend people do is look at it from a perspective of what you're doing. If you are going to diet, I always tell people for at least Gen Pop, you're better off doing less work and just eating a little bit less. And the reason is because it's easier to manage from time management. You won't make excuses of missing training sessions. And that's especially important if you're seeing somebody in person. So anytime you're doing fat loss, did I lose you? I got you, but not your face. Oh, there it is. You're back. So it's like, if you're focused on fat loss, set your diet and then train enough, train enough to hold on the muscle tissue, train enough to get the adaptations you're looking for. If you're trying to gain weight, we have a whole different conversation because at this point we need to feed up, not feed down. So in that situation, I would write out my training program and I would match the nutrition. So fat loss, match your training to nutrition. For weight gain, match your nutrition with your training. It realistically, semantically is the same thing, but it's a different way of looking at it. And what a lot of people will do is they'll try to write a training program for fat loss that has too much shit and then they diet too hard on it. Whereas what they need to be doing is just doing enough to get where they need to go and letting diet do its work. And now if you were if it was another coach like people that I train or if I'm talking about an athlete, we've got a different conversation because we're we've got some different things we have to take care of because a coach is wanting to get a lot stronger, like a lot stronger than what most gym pop want to do. They have performance things they're doing with athletes at performance things. So we have a different conversation. But I think a lot of people need to look at the programming aspect of this and the application on the client side from what is the easiest thing for the client to do? What is the easiest? And the easiest thing would be a little bit less work, but also a little bit less calories instead of trying to feed up and train up. Because it's really easy for coaches. And I fell prey to this for a long time because I love to train. I love to train. I don't mind like eating shit tons and just working like a madman. But the reality of most gen pop is they just don't have the time and they don't have the reserves to do a lot of this stuff. So we have to find strategies that work well for them.
