Chapter 18 · Matter Athletica
Leptin, Ghrelin, and Hunger Signaling

I don't know if that makes any sense to people. I'm a car guy. So like again, I think if everybody viewed things on a continuum, they they they done
understand it a little bit more because in a lot of times these these two extremes of the continuum you'll see very similar pathologies for different reasons right so for for example leptin is a good one because a lot of well hopefully a lot of coaches are understand this concept that leptin being a global appetite suppressant so back in the day it was in the 90s when they figured out what leptin did and they thought oh we had this is how we're going to get solve the obesity epidemic We're just going to inject fat people with leptin and they won't want to eat. So they did that and nothing happened. And then it figured out fat people have super physiological levels of leptin. So the receptors are desensitized. So leptin is never going to fix things. So if you, if you think about people who are grossly obese, like if you go to Vegas and you go to buffet, you'll see these guys, they can't, they're, they need three seats to sit down and they've got 25 plates stacked at the, at the buffet. They don't have a good appetite signaling. So no matter how much they eat, it never touches the side. So they're constantly hungry. Now, if we look at the opposite end of that, when you're dieting, you're going through the same shit. Nothing ever touches the side. It's still that same system, but for a different reason. Now that you're low body fat, you don't have enough leptin, but you have good leptin sensitivity. On the fat person's side, you've got plenty of leptin, but no leptin sensitivity. So you're hungry and a hostage at both extremes through the same system for two different reasons.
