Nervous System Regulation in Elite Athletes

March 04, 2021

100% when it comes to stress um there's a huge amount in terms of fat storage and like negative effects of muscle building i think there's no coincidence that the best bodybuilders in the world tend to be super relaxed and pretty chilled out doing things yeah yeah i mean shit like crazy personalities in that respect to super driven and stressed all the time. And that almost is anecdotal evidence of that theory. Yeah, I mean, they understand that you stimulate growth in the gym by basically harming yourself. And then you have to go home and you have to rest. If you don't rest, you're not gonna grow as fast as you need to. And they try to stay chilled out, you know, most of the time. You see that though with a lot of very driven athletes. You always see this, you know,

very calm. If you've ever been to a powerlifting meet, you'll know what I'm talking about, right? So I grew up powerlifting, bodybuilding, and strongman and track and all that. And, you know, you go to a powerlifting meet, you know, they've got like this ragey, like screaming Satan music and everybody's bald with guts and purple goatees and that type of thing. And they're all eating Pringles and ding-dongs and shit. And, but what you notice is when a guy's ready to go on the platform, like he's just stone cold nothing. And you'll see guys or girls walk up to the platform and they'll get in front of the bar to deadlift and then all of a sudden this weird, somebody's flipped the light switch and they just go fucking mental. Like you'll see guys just go crazy and they grab the bar and go. And then they put the bar down and then somebody flipped the switch again and they're just calming down, right? And you'll see that with all high level athletes, especially if they're good athletes where they know when to turn it on and when to turn it off, and they don't like to burn off excessive amounts of energy or effort. And that's the same thing with bodybuilders. You see bodybuilders going to do crazy, insane, ridiculous shit in the gym with drop sets and chain the bands and screaming at each other, slapping each other in the face, and then when they leave the gym, they're just sipping on their shake like nothing happened. But that's what it takes. Obviously, they're flipping their nervous system on and off.
