Testing and Improving Mitochondrial Function

Which we can measure this with, if you have a lactate scalp, which I have one, you can measure fasting lactate. And if it's really high, then you know that their biochemistry is fucked up. They've lost metabolic flexibility. That's getting kicked back out. I was going to ask the question of, if you have the sense that maybe you've got someone who's got poor metabolic or mitochondrial health, is that like lactate tests like something that gives you a little hint about that absolutely because you're watching where is this stuff going now you can run things we have things like called organic gases testing we can look at things like that it's a urinary test um you can look at things like you know what's that you it's basically uh measuring the metabolites of your metabolism yeah right so what are you peeing out yeah so you'll see things it's very often i I see things where their pyruvate is very low and their lactate is really high. And when that ratio is off, that means that pyruvate is not entering and they're having to process a lot of lactate. So they're highly anaerobic and they have really poor aerobic fitness. So that changes exercise prescription. So we do some aerobic work and we limit the neural work. So a lot of heavy loading and a lot of lactate work and we drive them down to a different adaptation and we can fix that. Is that because the aerobic works more likely to drive like the mitochondrial biogenesis? Yeah, well that's one thing it's the metophagy and also mitochondrial biogenesis, right? Yeah, because you need both. Yeah, you can't just stimulate mitochondrial biogenesis when you need to remove all the defunct mitochondria It's not working though. So is that when you maybe do something like fasting or something? Is that when the autophagy starts going? I don't think we need to go that extreme. Fasting is cool. I like fasting. but it's not for everybody. I agree. I can go seven days without eating anything as long as I have fluids. I'm fine. I just work and I'm cool. I find other shit to do. I masturbate. I play Fortnite. I go on long walks on the beach with my dog or whatever. My wife, however, if she misses one meal, she gets hangry. Hangry. I have to suffer. The dog suffers. Everybody suffers, so she gets up, she can't skip meals, she does not fast. But she's a prototypical ectomorph. She needs food, she can't regulate her blood sugar like I can, right? So I'm more mesomorphic, I've got plenty of capacity to do that, right? Yeah.
