Metabolic Flexibility and Carbohydrates

How does that work where people are more aerobically fit, they're able to actually tolerate carbohydrates much better? Because that's still very misunderstood. Yeah. So I, the way I view, the way I view macros is a little different than other people. I view carbohydrates as being your fight or flight, uh, macronutrient. So when we look at the, in terms of metabolic flexibility, what that means is you should be able to switch between different energy substrates easily, depending on what you're doing. And what we find is that the more sympathetically dominant it is, or the more chronic stress someone has for a long time, the more their body gets to where it wants to burn carbohydrates at a higher percentage than fat. So let's assume that in someone who is metabolically flexible, at rest they're burning roughly about 70% fat and about 30% carbohydrate. As they get chronically stressed out, the rate of glucose flux into the cell increases to the point where the mitochondria can't process it, so it has to move these substrates out of the way. So like glucose will turn into pyruvate, go in the mitochondria. But if pyruvate can't get into the mitochondria because something else is high like acetyl-CoA, then pyruvate has to be moved out of the way. So it's reduced as lactate. So you'll see people that have really high fasting serum lactate. And I've got a monitor that I can prick you. It looks like a glucometer. You've seen it. I showed it to you in Vancouver. And I can see what your resting lactate is. And if that is over where it needs to be, that's telling me that your flow of glucose is not very good. So we can use that. We can use a glucometer to see if the cell is becoming resistant because it's basically trying to slow down substrates coming into the cell because the mitochondria can't keep up with it. So then they become insulin resistant and it gets very difficult for them to eat carbohydrates without causing further issues. So if we can create more mitochondrial volume, then I can spread that glucose out to more energy factories, which then lessens that insulin resistant state. And it also lowers the amount of serum lactate, which means that I'm not having to reduce a lot of pyruvate. I can carry that through to make more energy faster and I can store glycogen more easily. So you're saying like learning the Krebs cycle is kind of important or something?
