The Four Stages of Nutritional Competence

January 27, 2023

But, you know, you look at, you look at these different levels of competence, you know, the highest level, the best level where you have intuitive eating is unconscious competence. Unconscious competence takes, it's just like anything, it's just building up a 200 kilo bench press. If you're a man, you go to the gym, you've got a 75 kilo bench press, you want a 200 kilo bench press, that's going to take a real fucking long time. Well, nutritional literacy and understanding how food works and creating those patterns, that takes a long fucking time. So if you are at the bottom where you have unconscious incompetence, you just really don't know how food works. You don't understand how to weigh and measure or eyeball food. You don't know how to manage your hunger cues. You're prone to going into the pantry and binging every night, you have a very low level of nutritional literacy and you have a very low level of competence. So the goal is to take you from that. You know, I don't know what I don't know. This is why I'm screwing up. I have to get you to the point where it's like, OK, I still screw up. I'm still incompetent, but I'm now understanding why I'm doing that. Then you have to get them to a level that where they're they're conscious and they're competent. So they're like, I know what I'm supposed to do. I'm ticking all the boxes. And then eventually get to the point where they can just eat. They can just free eat instinctually because they understand when to stop eating. They understand what they're supposed to be eating. They understand what they need to limit eating because these are my trigger foods or whatever. But people, people need to understand there's a process to get there. And some people can go straight from unconscious incompetence and go straight into being consciously competent, which means like if I have a guy that comes in, He's like, I'll eat a meal plan. I'll eat the same shit every day, whatever. You can take them from that unconscious incompetence to conscious competence really fast. And then you can move them into unconscious competence really fast as well. But if you have somebody comes in because I want flexible dieting, I want to eat all kinds of different shit. I want to make sure I want a treat every day. It's my birthday every day. It's like your process is going to be a lot slower and your results are going to be a lot slower because the first person will do what needs to happen to get the results quickly. And you want to, the people who want the treats all the time are basically telling me I'm caving to impulse hedonistic desires. I won't put away hedonistic desires long enough to get to my goal. There's so many things I want to say on that.
